Pain…and…Confusion

Photo by Gabriel Meinert on Unsplash

Dear Readers,

Thank you for coming here!

Went through my financials again.

It is nothing but Pain…and…Confusion!

Photo by Jp Valery on Unsplash

PAIN!

I have made so many mistakes — and those mistakes are so expensive that I can barely afford them even now.

The combined financial costs alone of those mistakes are easily 2x my total net-worth now.

So I experience very negative feelings, pain, regret, self-blame and sometimes anger.

But I am kind of still repeating some of those mistakes.

Time to learn, dude!

Compared to PAIN, CONFUSION is even a more serious problem, because it directly impacts the actions I take.

CONFUSION 1: How to get past the past?

I realize three reasons why I cannot get past the past:

  1. It is hard to ignore the heavy losses — I would have hit my retirement numbers if not for these mistakes
  2. I do not want to take easy on myself — I would like to retain these as painful reminders so that I learn
  3. I have not got rid of my legacy portfolio — Honestly, I am not sure what to do with them.

Part of me wants to clear them and start over. These are individual stocks that I do not know and I do not have interest in researching them either. Also, they are not generating returns.

On the other hand, if I clear them, paper loss will turn into actual loss. And even though they are not generating returns, they are not tanking much further either. I have lost 98% of the value for some stocks. How much further down can they go?

Also, I do not know if I clear them and invest the money elsewhere, the return would be better. Actually, I am secretly hoping that some of these will bounce back, hopefully faster than the world index. But I understand hoping is not a strategy.

Closing my eyes and following my gut, I guess I am a little inclined to clearing them and investing the money in World index. After all, I can hold world index for 20 years. I do not know how many of those individual stocks I currently have will still exist in 20 years.

But it is much harder to pull the plug than logically expected.

If you are reading this article and have advice for me, I would be grateful.

CONFUSION 2: What is the right way to build wealth?

I am struggling to keep up with my yearly target on Total Net-Worth growth, which I set a few years back before Covid. And that was a very conservative target.

Our expenses largely stayed within our estimates. So the problem is the income.

Our salary income has grown faster than planned, partly due to inflation. But the investment losses are really holding us back.

As you can see from my monthly updates, investment losses just erased our monthly salary for some months.

Needless to say, I am still very far away from my 40/40 goal.

So I am not exactly doing well here.

And I am not sure what the right way is. Investment outcome is just so out of our control. I can see no path to wealth with enough certainty.

I thought of taking investment courses, but I do not want to spend the efforts and I do not really trust them — part of the reason we are in this deep loss was due to my wife taking some of these courses and following some of those “experts”.

The three things I can figure out for now that might work is:

  1. Work hard for promotions and pay raises — Still out of my control, but less so than investments I would say
  2. Cut expenses — This does not make me feel good. We are always frugal people. Sometimes, I do feel that my family and I deserve better. What’s worse, the expenses saved is nothing compared to investment losses
  3. DCA into World index — Outcome is out of control, but activity is controllable. This time, I will stick to it — I do not have any better ideas anyway.

Lets see how it goes and as usual, I will post weekly, monthly and yearly updates.

Monthly Net-Worth Update — Jan 2023

Photo by micheile dot com on Unsplash

Dear Readers,

Thank you for coming here!

We are already half way through Jan 2023. It seemed like yesterday that we were still talking about ending 2022.

How time flies!

Wish all my readers a Prosperous, Happy and Healthy 2023!

Photo by Dmitry Demidko on Unsplash

Regarding the monthly update, you might have noticed that the timing of update has been pushed to more of the middle of the month, rather than the end of the month.

This is because towards the end of the month, depending on the exact date of update, our salary may or may not have come in, which creates the undesired inconsistency in our monthly numbers, i.e. some months might include no salary while other months might include two months of salary.

Therefore, going forward, I will try to publish the update before 22nd of each month, which means our Jan salary will be counted in Feb and Feb salary in March etc.

This is not ideal, but at least the consistency is kept.

Here is the snapshot of our Total Net-Worth for Jan 2023.

Net-Worth increase from last month: 34K SGD, -0.38KG Gold

Typically, we will have a bigger increase in Jan, due to AWS, bonuses, CPF interests etc.

But this year, we were hit by further losses from my wife’s portfolio. She found time to do a detailed portfolio check, only to find out that our losses were far more severe than our quick estimate.

The losses were recorded in this update.

On top of this, we also suffered some loss due to exchange rate in this cycle.

Luckily, the market has been doing well after the new year and our portfolio recovered a bit, which, together with our work income and CPF interest, was able to make up for the losses.

In terms of Gold, our little TNW increase was easily erased and more by Gold price increase. We had negative growth this month.

Photo by 金 运 on Unsplash

Investment: -8.27% annualized return, incl. dividend

This is a big improvement compared to last month. But this is not a true reflection of our portfolio performance as this is mainly because we placed quite some money in T-bills and SSB, increasing our investment base.

In plain and painful words, our losses did not reduce significantly. We are still in deep deep RED.

Monthly Net-Worth Update — Feb 2022

Photo by Visual Stories || Micheile on Unsplash

Dear Readers,

Thank you for coming here!

We are nearing the end of Feb.

Below is another summary of our Net-worth.

Net-Worth increase from last month: 45K SGD, -0.12KG Gold

The increase was mainly due to our salary and my freelancer pay from last year.

Our stock portfolio recovered a bit, but only accounted for a small portion of the network increase.

This month, we also incurred our insurance bill.

As for Gold, the price increased, which means we are worth less gold in terms of weight. So that is negative increase there.

Overall, a pretty good month.

Investment: -8.95% annualized return, incl. dividend

Slight recovery, but really insignificant.

My Market Transactions - Wk49 2021

Photo by Dennis Groom on Unsplash

Dear Readers,

Thank you for coming here!

We are in Dec! Last calendar month in 2021! How time flies!

Here is another update on the weekly transactions,

Still NIL.

My portfolio got some recovery last month. And with the new variant, it tanked again to 170K paper loss...

Not sure what to do or think about it...

If it continues to drop, maybe some buying opportunities will emerge for the counters I am looking at.

So life goes on!

Deep Fried Again!!! Monthly Net-Worth Update - Aug 2021

Photo by James Sutton on Unsplash

Dear Readers,

Thank you for coming here!

Deep frying season continues!

Here comes another monthly update!

Net-Worth increase from last month: -10K SGD, -0.02KG Gold

My portfolio continues to dip.

It recovered a bit in the past week, but still not comparable to the huge drops in the first 3 weeks of the month.

Salaries are not enough to make up for it.

Photo by Maxim Hopman on Unsplash

Investment: -5.91% annualized return, incl. dividend

It is not the worst return rate we have had.

But in terms of absolute numbers, it blows any other month away.

Life goes on anyhow.

I am making good progress on my games at least…haha!

Photo by Max Kukurudziak on Unsplash

Dear Readers,

Thank you for coming here!

Deep frying season for this Jul!

Gosh, it is overwhelming!

Here comes another monthly update!

Net-Worth increase from last month: -60K SGD, -1.21KG Gold

My portfolio got bled dry, with over 100K loss on paper.

Nothing else comes close in terms of the impact to our net-worth.

Photo by Maxim Hopman on Unsplash

Investment: -3.07% annualized return, incl. dividend

Negative again after Mar/Apr last year.

But I am a dead pig now. So no fear for boiling water...Haha

Life goes on.

Burnt! My Market Transactions — Wk29 2021

Photo by Jp Valery on Unsplash

Dear Readers,

Thank you for coming here!

If you are in a ditch, do not worry and stay calm!

It will get worse!

That is exactly what is happening to my portfolio.

I am seriously burnt!

Every time I thought the drop was nearing the bottom, I was shown the bottomless abyss!

I cannot look at it now…Oustrich time will continue!

Below is a summary of the transactions:

Capital injection: ~35KSGD

1.MU

Instructed by my wife.

Apparently, this company will be able to mass product a certain type of “chips”.

2.China Southern Airlines

We used to have big profits on this stock. We chose to hold it instead of taking profits.

Now we are losing money.

We added positions. The pandemic wont last forever.

Capital outflow: None

It is so bloody that my total return of investment since the very beginning is negative now….

Lets see how much lower it can go.

Bleeding out!

Photo by David Clode on Unsplash

Dear readers,

Thank you for coming here!

I am bleeding out both physically and mentally.

My son kept jumping on the bed before going to sleep last night for fun until his knee landed on my mouth.

I could still see the red mark inside my mouth in the morning…

So no more Hotpot, Chilli Crab, Black Pepper Chicken… … for a while.

Photo by Darya Tryfanava on Unsplash

Compared to physical bleeding, mental bleeding is even harder to take.

And the bleeding has began since the mid of last week. I think I am close to the state of “Bled Out”.

As for the reason?

My stock portfolio of course.

It dropped from one new low to another, all while the market is doing good.

Now it is so bloody red that I do not know what to think or do.

Staring at it does not do any good and just makes me feel like shit.

My courage to add positions after the drop is seriously affected now also.

Now I tend to trick my mind into forgetting about it.

I do not quite know what to do any way.

But I believe it will come back sooner or later.

So patience is a virtue.

Taken by author

Refer to the above two pictures.

The one on the left was taken this morning when I walked to my study room.

The one on the right was just a moment later. I just walked into the living room and had a cup of water and when I returned, I saw the full son, shining.

It has been “climbing” the whole night, just to “jump out” at that moment.

While the moment is glorious, the “hard work” and “tortuous wait” is necessary for it to eventually come and shine.

Happy investing!

My Market Transactions — Wk22 2021

Photo by Micheile Henderson on Unsplash

Dear Readers,

Thank you for coming here!

So we are entering June.

Summary is officially here.

Hope stock market will warm up too.

Here are my transactions for the last week!

Capital injection: ~20KSGD

1.YALA

I was waiting for the entry point at 18.5 and I surely got it.

And it just kept dropping, even after the announcement of share buy-back.

So after the two transactions last week, I added another 1000 shares at 15.5.

And it continued to drop afterwards.

This stock is the number 1 holdings in my portfolio now.

Let’s see how it goes.

Photo by Austin Distel on Unsplash

Capital outflow: None

1.CSPC PHARMA

We cleared the position last week with ~40% gain.

I think we were just learning our lessons to pocket the gains gradually.

It is a small position anyway.

The whole portfolio is still in the deep red.

Hope the market warms up with summer.

Happy investing!
